Sonic Test of Cast-in-place Concrete Piles

The sonic test system is widely used for quality control and evaluation of concrete structures. The method is an ultrasonic test that involves measuring the propagation time of ultrasonic signals between two probes in the piles.

The velocity of the wave incorporates all the concrete conditions between the probes. When a sound wave travels between two transducers it travels in straight line through solid material, the transit time is the lowest while amplitude is the largest.

When cracks exit, the sound wave travels around the crack. Thus, transit time is larger and the amplitude is smaller. Vertical tubes are attached to the reinforcing cage of the pile. To optimize the results four tubes were placed in each pile.
